Pedestrian Safety List
At corners and crosswalks:
POINT
across the road with your arm to show drivers you want to cross.
PAUSE
until cars stop. Make eye contact with drivers.
PROCEED
with your arm extended when all cars have stopped. Keep scanning both
sides of the road for hidden dangers. Drivers can't always see you.

The
POINT PAUSE PROCEED: Welcome to the Pedestrian Zone DVD
was developed in coordination with the Edmonton Police Service
and several
other traffic safety partners to provide educators with an
engaging, effective
resource to teach pedestrian safety and provide children with
safety tools and
positive practices that will allow them to thrive safely in our
highly mobile
environment.
The DVD approaches pedestrian safety from the perspectives of
both the driver and pedestrian and is ideally suited for children in
Grades 3 to 6.
Less than five minutes long, this DVD is fun, fast-moving and
sure to grab the attention of your students.

Pedestrian Safety Checklist
- Look for traffic safety signs, and marked crosswalks.
- Walk on the sidewalk. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing
traffic.
- Cross the road at the corner of the street or at a marked
crosswalk, never cross in the middle of the road. Watch for cars
backing up and obstacles like cyclists, toys, tree branches,
etc.
- Obey pedestrian lights. Cross the street only when you see the
walk sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop.
If the walk hand begins flashing, continue walking.
- And - NEVER run out from between parked cars or buses.
