Winter roadways in Alberta are challenging for drivers of all vehicles.
Are you ready for what the season throws your way?
Here are some quick tips:
- If you brake and begin to skid, take your foot off the brake pedal
and steer in the direction you want to go. When the wheels regain their
grip, brake firmly and smoothly.
- Never try to pass a snowplow or salt and sand spreader, these vehicles
do pull over at regular intervals to allow vehicles to pass.
- Carry an emergency winter survival kit.
- Make sure your vehicle is ready for winter - check your battery,
brakes, wipers, all belts and hoses, and all essential fluids.
- If you get stuck, put on your four-way flashers, make sure the exhaust
pipe is free of snow and don't leave your vehicle unless help is nearby.
- Check the weather conditions before you leave, tell people your route
and estimated time of arrival and try to travel only during daylight
hours.
