New Years resolutions like losing weight, getting into shape or quitting smoking are often hard to keep because they usually require so much effort to maintain. But, becoming a better driver is one New Years resolution that can be easy. "Most people think they are good drivers but there's always something you can improve on," says Jeanette Espie, executive director of the Alberta Office of Traffic Safety. "Through our habits and the risks we take, we're all part of Alberta's Traffic Safety problem, whether we like it or not, and we all have a part to play in improving it." You can start small by being more courteous to other motorists and begin to build from there. Some traffic safety tips to help you become a better driver in the New Year include:
And if your getting a little rusty on the rules of the road, refresh your memory by reading through the "Basic Licence Driver's Handbook." Handbooks are available, free of charge at any Alberta Registry office. " All drivers could probably benefit from periodically re-reading their driver's handbook and then evaluating their own driving skills," says Espie. So as you start thinking about 2007 and how you are going to be a better person - think about becoming a better driver.
