Driver Safety Head Graphic Rules of the Road : Driving Near Buses

School buses transport hundreds of thousands of Alberta school children daily. As a motorist it is up to you to make sure they get to school safely.

  • Alternating flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to stop. Do the same.
  • No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP whenever approaching a stopped bus with activated alternating flashing red lights - unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway.
  • Motorists should always watch for children crossing the road and be prepared to slow down or stop.
  • The speed limit in most school zones and playgrounds is 30 kilometres per hour. Pay attention to posted speed limits.
  • Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.
